To Olivia

This is a film that provides a gateway into Roald Dahl’s (Hugh Bonneville) heart, mind and soul, but equally, also into the heart, mind and soul of his partner Patricia Neal (Keeley Hawes).

It’s the story of Dahl getting over the death of his seven-year-old daughter by writing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while his movie star wife, actress Patricia Neal also came to terms with the tragedy in her own way by eventually winning an Oscar for Hud. The film also stars Sam Heughan as Paul Newman and Geoffrey Palmer in his last screen performance.

A beautiful film, it will make you cry, it will make you hold your heart, but it will give you lots of hope as well.

A film about grief inevitably touches some people , but this is more about the psychology of loss. ☆☆☆☆

Hugh Bonneville is surprisingly effective as the curmudgeonly and often drunken Dahl, while Keeley Hawes delights as his glamorous film-star wife, Patricia Neal.

Undeniably moving.
— Empire
Hugh Bonneville brings a rumpled, teddy-bearish charm as the beloved children’s writer, struggling with the demands of fame & Keeley Hawes is feisty as the overshadowed Neal.
